WOW!! The "Alki Beach Residence" lighting installation, which I saw today, is better than we could have planned or have hoped for.

The vertical stair/path lighting fixtures match the project perfectly, the small half-dome fixtures are very small and almost disappear. Denise says she's very happy and all of the installations look very well planned, laid out, and professional.

The company is run by a husband and wife team (Mary and Craig) and is a perennial winner of the highest distinction from the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals. What makes Northwest a cut above the rest is their incredible attention to detail, coupled with extraordinary artistry. From start to finish, they were a pleasure to work with.

My partner and I were astounded by the level of customization offered. During the nighttime demo, Mary and Craig showcased a variety of fixtures; some designed to illuminate tree canopies, others for highlighting shrubs, rocks, driveways (able to withstand being driven over) and water features. The company collaborates with their supplier on R&D and was able to source fixtures featuring an “ultra warm” color temperature of 2200k for our project. The glow from these lights emulates sunset, something we had not seen before in a residential application.

My partner and I appreciated Northwest’s organized approach, with Mary creating a digital schematic that allowed iterations on the placement of each fixture. For the installation, Craig and Max adapted Mary's 2D schematic to our 3D environment, experimenting with heights and angles to fine-tune each fixture. The project was completed on-time, within budget, and the end result wildly exceeded our aesthetic expectations.

It's not just about the "what" - but the "how"!

The results are fantastic - it takes a great eye to do more than just throw light and Craig and Mary bring the goods. They were able to see how the house would look during the bid processes - in broad daylight! Ultimately - there were almost no modifications or changes from Craig's original vision. His enthusiasm for the design was contagious - it came out great.

Equally important - Craig and Mary were a pleasure to work with. The planning processes was friendly and clear; Mary is responsive and easy to work with. She went the extra mile in helping us secure an electrician for the project. Finally time for install and Craig was very easy to have around - attentive, respectful, and friendly. He had his installation plan - and went to work - but I felt in-the-loop all along the way. The project took about a week and to be frank, I missed Craig and Max's arrival the next day after the job was complete.

I have high confidence this job was done well and that the only time I'll really need to get in touch with them is when we decide to do "phase 2!"

We recently had our outdoor lighting replaced by Northwest Outdoor Lighting. When we bought our home a decade or so ago, we had outdoor lights (incandescent) installed in our new backyard and a few years later we had LED lights installed in the front. As the landscape grew, the lights were no longer achieving the results we were looking for in the yard. Also, the incandescent fixtures in the back were starting to fall apart and changing lightbulbs on a regular basis was a drag.

Mary came to our home and really took time to talk about the different options and her visions for the yard. The attention to detail and guidance during the planning/quoting phase was fantastic and the reason we chose to go with Northwest Outdoor Lighting. Mary’s knowledge of lighting gives her a wealth of information on not only products but also the goals you are trying to achieve as a homeowner. We went with the LED system which will last longer and be far more energy efficient. It should also be noted there were no problems working within our desired budget.

Installation was professional and went exactly as promised. Craig and his team are so knowledgeable and experienced they made the job look effortless. I have no idea how they do what they do but we are grateful they took such great care of us.

We have a beautiful home in the woods of Washington that needed some special attention with standard driveway lighting. We had no idea where to go for quotes and were lucky enough to meet up with Mary and Craig at NWOL - Boy are we glad we did!! We had no idea what the current state of lighting technology was nor what the "art of the possible was" for our yard and surroundings. Working closely with both Mary and Craig, we designed a complete package including driveway lighting, path lights, and a number of amazing shrub and tree arrangements. I spent more than three years searching for a company up to the challenge of artistic and dramatic lighting of our home site which is heavily forested with mature Douglas Firs -- tall skinny trees with not much foliage if any at eye level. I found Northwest Outdoor Lighting (NOL) through the network of experts in the Washington State University Extension Master Gardener program for Jefferson County. From my first email inquiry, I knew that this was a company unlike so many in the landscape and residential improvement sectors: President Mary Peterson immediately responded personally, with specific relevant and responsive information, and invited an immediate move forward. I knew even before the initial on-site consultation that this was a company I could work effectively with and from that moment until this, with our new exterior lights on, there has not been a single moment of frustration or disappointment with NOL.

And here is why this NOL client is so wholly satisfied and thrilled with this company:

1. At the initial consultation, Ms. Peterson LISTENED intently to our descriptions of the results we were after and then by herself walked our property. It was clear from the very beginning that there was no plan to offer us a cookie-cut standard collection of safety/malibu/homeowner special lights that I could have had through a big box store or the neighborhood landscape service. It is my experience that such skilled listening is a rare and wonderful skill.

2. Shortly after the initial consultation, Mary returned after dark with a proposed design and equipment that allowed her and Craig Peterson -- master of the intersection of technical know-how and artistic design -- to demonstrate every single detail of NOL's proposed design. Together my husband and I and Mary and Craig walked about an acre of our property, examining the nuances of the effects of each and every proposed light site, adjusting specific angles and intensities, customizing every detail of the design to enhance the specific features of our property. This attention to detail and complete commitment to getting it just right as we wanted was, in my experience, extraordinary. But even those qualities were surpassed by the sheer genius of the proposed design.

3. Words almost fail me in summarizing the brilliance and artistry of the design created for us by Northwest Outdoor Lighting. Somehow Mary and Craig knew just which trees to light, just which direction and angle to catch, just which structures on our site could be glorious after dark. And they knew what not to light as well -- a real hallmark of artistic integrity and experience. Our exterior lighting design is not just simply perfection, it is art.

4. I should also tell you that installation went smoothly --literally issue/problem-free. I have never before had that experience in any home project and I am an experienced home rehab/renovate veteran with six long-term projects under my belt. Even tiny details were attended to by NOL-- the color of our utility box, for example. Old lighting was collected and removed.

5. Finally, you need to know that Mary and Craig are engaging, warm, nice, interesting people who are a pleasure to work with. I wish they lived across the street from me.

In providing reviews of any service provider, I always try to offer constructive suggestions to improve the service or to give the homeowner an assist in managing the project. I can't do that here because I don't know how this company could be any better at what they do. Let me summarize with this: I live on three acres of God's country and one of those acres is now beautifully and tastefully lighted. One down, two to go. As soon as I am ready for the second phase, I will make just one phone call.

Mary Peterson, CEO & Lead Designer, and her assistant arrived early in the window promised. This is an interior LED landscape (in the atrium) lighting, five lights with one not working - I already determined it was not the bulb. Mary quickly isolated the problem, a faulty junction, replaced the part and made a new run to the fixture- let there be light!

Both were friendly, efficient and restored the garden so that you could not notice what work had been done. I hope I don't need NWOL again but if I do, I will call them first.

Which reminds me, A large local lighting company gave me five recommendations for someone to work on this problem. I contacted three of them and none of them returned my inquiry. I called Northwest Outdoor Lighting on my own and received a call back the next morning. I will be contacting that lighting company and insist they add Northwest Outdoor Lighting to their list of recommendations.
