A Gardener's Delight
This enchanting property in the Bryant neighborhood of NE Seattle, owned by the retired proprietor of Ravenna Gardens in the University District, is a testament to exceptional horticulture, innovative landscape architecture, and meticulous care. While the property may not boast extensive acreage, it more than makes up for it with its beautifully curated plant collections and thoughtfully composed outdoor spaces.
The landscape was masterfully designed by Land Morphology, whose eclectic industrial aesthetic transforms the compact property into a series of immersive garden rooms. Layered terraces, gabion retaining walls, weathering steel edging, and crushed rock stairways create texture and movement throughout the landscape. One of the garden's most captivating features is a waterfall that emerges directly from a gabion wall before cascading into a reclaimed water trough, seamlessly blending natural elements with reclaimed industrial materials.
Our lighting design was created to complement, rather than compete with, this remarkable landscape architecture. With such a diverse collection of specimen plants and distinctive structural elements, the challenge was to reveal the beauty of each feature without overwhelming the intimate scale of the garden. Carefully positioned uplights highlight select focal plants while subtle grazing techniques accent the texture of the weathering steel, stone, and gabion walls. The result is a harmonious rhythm of light that naturally guides the eye through each terrace.
As dusk settles, warm ambient lighting transforms the garden into an inviting retreat for entertaining. The waterfall, reclaimed trough, sculptural plantings, and layered landscape architecture take on new dimension as carefully controlled illumination reveals texture, depth, and shadow. Path lighting provides safe navigation through the crushed rock stairways while remaining discreet enough to preserve the garden's tranquil atmosphere.
This project demonstrates how exceptional lighting can elevate already outstanding landscape architecture. By collaborating with the homeowner's vision and respecting Land Morphology's distinctive design language, we created a custom lighting system that celebrates every layer of the landscape—from the industrial materials and architectural grading to the extraordinary botanical collection—allowing the garden to be experienced long after sunset.

Privacy without Sacrifice
When fencing and screens are added to a property for privacy, they often create dark corners and uninviting walkways. To transform these areas, we employed a thoughtful lighting design by installing mini spotlights on the architectural screen and along the pathway to the backyard. These lights wash against the fencing, reflecting a soft, inviting glow that illuminates the walkway and highlights the hanging plants. Strategically positioned to enhance the architectural elements, the spotlights provide functional illumination, turning previously dark areas into welcoming highlights of the property.
Entertainer's Dream
With the many entertaining levels and stairs on this property, we chose our P9 path light for its precision and ability to direct light exactly where needed. The P9 path lights were strategically placed to illuminate the stairs and pathways, ensuring safe navigation while also highlighting key features. These fixtures create a beautifully lit environment that guides guests through the various entertaining spaces with ease.
To further enhance the ambiance, we mounted mini spotlights under the soffit. These spotlights were carefully aimed to showcase the fun and unique plantings on the tabletops, adding a touch of charm and highlighting the homeowner's personal style. The combined effect of the P9 path lights and mini spotlights creates a cohesive and inviting atmosphere, perfect for evening gatherings and entertaining.
A Feast for Sore Eyes
Our specially designed Hawkeye mini well lights, equipped with a shield to prevent glare, were meticulously core drilled into the pavers to highlight the stunning gabion walls. This precise placement ensures that the outdoor dining area is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Guests can enjoy the beautifully lit gardens and the ambient lighting without the discomfort of glare in their eyes, creating a perfect environment for relaxation and socializing.
