Capitol Hill Colonial Home

Seattle, WA

19

Overall Project Synopsis

Located in the historic Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, this brick colonial home was thoughtfully illuminated in 2024 through a custom outdoor lighting design and installation by Northwest Outdoor Lighting. The project includes 62 low voltage LED fixtures, all set at a consistent 2700K color temperature to create a warm and cohesive nighttime environment. The goal of this Seattle outdoor lighting project was to enhance the home’s architectural character while improving safety, usability, and overall presence within a dense urban setting.

Capitol Hill presents a unique lighting challenge. Properties are often closer together, with strong architectural features and mature street trees that shape both light and shadow. For this home, the design focused on precision and restraint. Rather than overlighting, each fixture was placed to highlight key architectural elements, define transitions, and create a sense of depth without disrupting the surrounding neighborhood. The result is a lighting system that feels refined and intentional, allowing the home to stand out while remaining appropriate to its setting.

The front elevation of the brick colonial was a central focus. Architectural lighting was used to emphasize the symmetry and materiality of the home, bringing out the texture of the brick and the detail of the entryway. Soft uplighting highlights vertical elements, while carefully controlled beam spreads ensure that light remains on the home rather than spilling into adjacent properties. This approach reflects a high level of control that is essential for outdoor lighting design in Seattle’s more urban neighborhoods.

Pathways and stairways leading to the front entry were designed with both safety and visual flow in mind. Step lighting and pathway lighting guide movement naturally from the sidewalk to the front door, creating a welcoming and intuitive approach. Each transition is clearly defined without introducing glare, allowing visitors to navigate comfortably while maintaining the calm atmosphere of the property. This layered approach to pathway lighting ensures that function and design are working together rather than competing.

The surrounding landscape and perimeter spaces were also carefully considered. Low plantings, hedges, and retaining walls are subtly illuminated to create depth and continuity around the home. Lighting along the sidewalk edge and adjacent pathways helps define the property boundary while maintaining a cohesive connection to the streetscape. Mature trees are softly accented to introduce vertical interest and frame the home within its environment.

In the backyard and side yard spaces, lighting extends usability into the evening hours. Outdoor living areas are gently illuminated to support gathering and everyday use, while maintaining consistency with the front of the property. The use of a single 2700K color temperature throughout ensures that every space feels connected, creating a unified experience from front entry to backyard.

This Capitol Hill outdoor lighting project reflects Northwest Outdoor Lighting’s expertise in custom outdoor lighting design and installation in Seattle, WA. With 62 fixtures placed with precision, the system enhances the home’s architecture, improves safety, and creates a timeless nighttime presence. The result is a property that feels elevated, welcoming, and fully realized after dark.

Brick Wall Lighting Detail: Before and After

NWOL_Seattle_Harrington-4054 NWOL_Seattle_Harrington-4107

Subtle wall lighting transforms both safety and design, revealing texture, defining edges, and creating a seamless nighttime experience.

Before
The brick retaining wall and iron railing were left unlit, causing the edge of the property to fade into darkness at night. The texture of the brick, the greenery above, and the transition along the walkway were not visible, creating a gap in both safety and visual continuity. Without lighting, the space felt incomplete and disconnected from the rest of the home.

After
A discreetly integrated wall light introduces a soft wash of 2700K illumination, bringing out the texture of the brick and the detail of the surrounding greenery. The lighting defines the edge of the property while maintaining a low glare, refined look that blends into the architecture. This subtle addition improves visibility along the walkway and reinforces a cohesive, intentional lighting design from street to entry.
