Custom Landscape Lighting Design in Seward Park, Seattle

Perched on a hillside above Lake Washington near Seward Park, this Seattle residence enjoys sweeping evening views across the water and a landscape filled with mature trees, layered plantings, and winding garden paths. The homeowners wanted their outdoor spaces to feel welcoming after sunset—illuminated in a way that felt natural, elegant, and connected to the surrounding landscape.

Northwest Outdoor Lighting designed and installed a 32-fixture low-voltage lighting system that gently guides guests from the street to the front entry while highlighting the property’s distinctive trees and architectural details. Throughout the project we used a blend of 2700K and our signature Sunset Tone to create warmth and visual depth across the garden.

From the street, the softly illuminated tree canopy draws the eye toward the home while subtle pathway lighting ensures safe arrival along the winding walk. At the entry, warm architectural lighting welcomes visitors to the front door and creates a sense of arrival that complements the mid-century character of the home.

In the backyard, lighting extends the living space well into the evening. Garden beds, seasonal flowers, and sculptural trees are gently highlighted while the lake beyond becomes part of the nighttime experience. Carefully placed pathway and garden lights provide just enough illumination to move comfortably around the property without overpowering the peaceful views of the water and surrounding neighborhood.

The result is a lighting design that feels effortless—enhancing the beauty of the landscape, supporting nighttime safety, and allowing the homeowners to enjoy their property long after the sun has set.

Entry Path & Arrival Experience

The approach to the home is defined by a gently curving pathway and mature plantings that create a sense of discovery as guests move toward the front door.

Low-profile pathway lights guide the walk while subtle uplighting reveals the structure of nearby trees and garden beds. By combining 2700K and Sunset Tone fixtures, the lighting adds warmth without appearing overly bright—maintaining the quiet character of this established Seattle neighborhood.

The result is an arrival experience that feels safe, welcoming, and beautifully integrated with the landscape.

Mature Tree & Garden Illumination

One of the defining features of this property is its collection of mature trees and layered hillside gardens.

Strategically placed uplights reveal the branching structure and texture of these trees, allowing them to become dramatic focal points after dark. In contrast, softer lighting across shrubs, groundcover, and garden beds creates depth and dimension throughout the landscape.

This layered lighting approach allows the property to feel vibrant and alive at night while preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding environment.

Backyard Patio & Lake Washington Views

Behind the home, the property opens to expansive views of Lake Washington and the surrounding hillsides.

Rather than overpowering the scenery, the lighting design gently frames the patio and nearby garden beds so the view remains the star of the evening experience. Path lights and soft plant illumination provide comfortable navigation around the outdoor living space while maintaining a calm, relaxed atmosphere.

The result is a backyard that feels equally inviting for quiet evenings outdoors or gathering with friends while the lights of the lake shimmer in the distance.

"NWOL designed and installed our outdoor lighting system in 2020. They were wonderful to work with, and had a great eye for light placement and appearance! We were delighted with their work in every aspect. They listened well, as we described what we had in mind. The system has operated perfectly in the nearly 5 years since installation. They've been very easy to work with. We recommend them highly." - R.K.
